artist statement

One key takeaway from my time on the Mountain and in the City is that unexpected things will be revealed to you if your senses are attuned. It could be a bridge to a lost but familiar feeling or it might even present a tunnel that leads to thinking in an unexpected way. It might even lead you into or out of harm’s way.

One event that I will highlight at the end of these pages is that I recall constructing a timeline of my life at a young age. Assessing how I got to each node on my timeline became a useful tool for me to connect and remember all the people and places that I missed. Taking mental “screenshots” of moments in my daily life became a habit for me at a young age.

Here’s my theory. Passing a distinctive window display, grabbing a fleeting glance at random truck signage or hearing a snippet of a conversation can leave significant impressions in mind and memory. These moments set off and record reverberations that are reflexive if attuned to it. To me it all adds up to an experiential dose of what I surmise can only be part of an interactive multi-media art experience manifested by some higher force of intelligence.

My experiences as both an insider and outsider have opened my eyes to what makes this place and this moment in time so special. My art reflects themes familiar to me that connect like patchwork using a trusted set of varied methods to convey overt and covert themes.

Right now my work seems to embody the tethers of Americana that bind us through the passage of time. There is a lo-brow romance riddled with high-brow wordplay streaming out onto its:

highways,

airports,

hotels,

tenements,

city streets,

bars,

casinos,

& institutions.

This is the lifeblood of this place and it can be messy and exhilarating and teeming with invisible signs all around.
